My favourite part about having the tools to design and the tools to manufacture is the capability to reapply them in fun and creative ways.
Storytime:
A friend of mine purchased a polymer Squatty Potty to assist them with their daily routines at home.
Sadly, that squatty potty only lasted one month before the strength of the material failed.
In light of this, another friend and I purchased a wooden squatty potty as a birthday gift so he would not suffer from the lack of one. While that was a good solution, my engineering brain knew that even with a wooden Squatty Potty, it would meet the same demise, just delayed by the material choice. To preemptively get ahead of this, I used some primitive CAD capabilities to model up a 1/4" steel version, create drawings, and appropriate DWG files to laser cut the profiles. I had it cut, and I fabricated the unit. The Squatty Potty was upgraded to the Power Pooper.
Yes, he was in awe.
